| “CHECKMATE”
The inspiration of NARCISS’ Fall/Winter 2012 collection is the game of chess. With its black-and-white board, chess symbolises the world of polarised extremes in which we are now living. Checkmate is the situation in chess when the king is under direct attack and there is no way to avoid capitulation. In real life turbulent unrest, the everyday choice that needs to be taken has put us in the checkmate position. Is there a way out? Is the choice only between ‘white’ and ‘black’, ‘good’ and ‘bad’, ‘yes’ or ‘no’? We all crave balance, and the most progressive standpoint becomes neutrality. It gives way to the new minimalism and humble luxury. Some of the NARCISS’ collection garments vividly show the theme of chess, for example the black-and-white alpaca wool jacket with a knight application on it. On the other hand, there are garments with almost invisible reference to the very game of chess, instead referring to the spirit of the collection: the tension between two extremes and the victory of neutrality.
